School of Nursing opened June 1896, but closed its doors due to the Great Depression in 1935. The national nursing shortage created by the war necessitated reopening of the school with the first new class admitted August 5, 1943 after the completion of a new school building.
Saturday March 14, 1896 BH opened its doors. More than 2000 came to inspect (by carriage, trolley and shank’s mare). 6 years of planning to make hospital. Designated a nonprofit, general hospital governed by a Board of Trustees elected annually by the Corporation.
Within 5 years, an average of one new patient was admitted every day. The average LOS was 25 days and it cost $100 a week to run the hospital.
1968 BH admitted 10,094 patients. The average stay was 8 days with an operating cost of over 4 million dollars. In 1969 the “multi wing center” could accommodate 250 patients with bassinets for 36 infants, serving an area in which over 152,000 persons live. West Wing being opened.
First class graduated in 1898, at this time known as Brockton Hospital Training School for Nurses
136 weeks of school, 2000 hours of curriculum
Since 1898, 726 students graduated
Class of 1969, 35 will graduate and be the largest graduating class
1969 had 93 total students enrolled---including 4 male
Nurses of BH who died in service during the epidemic September-October 1918
